What causes endometriosis?

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women globally and it is one of chronic inflammatory disease.

Endometriosis is one of the most popular condition I treat in the clinic and today, I would like to share the common misconception I often hear and one of hidden cause that not many of us are aware of.

Also I would like you to remember that below is all same condition, just different names are given depending on where they are.

  • Endometriosis

  • Adenomyosis

  • Ovarian cysts

That is why people often have combination of endometriosis and ovarian cysts, because they are same thing!

'Endo' is not really a hormonal condition

Among all my endo/adeno/ovarian cysts patients, I haven't heard many people who got hormone tests done by their doctor, yet being prescribed hormonal treatment to 'Balance their hormones'. I also haven't heard anyone who cured their lesion by receiving hormonal treatment either.

Instead, it looks like our digestive health has a key role.

E.coli is one of our gut bacteria.

Recent study identified several strains from this species can produce a toxin called colibactin which can lead to inflammation and damage DNA in human cells. UK study found they can cause pelvic inflammation and related to endometriosis.

Other key bacteria is the well known 'streps' - The streptococcus bacteria.

Another research found people with endometriosis (also adenomyosis and ovarian cysts) tend to have Streptococcus bacteria overgrown in their endometrium and cervix.

It's been successful reducing (or even making it dissapear) cysts among my patients by rebalancing their digestive environment.

What should I do? Take probiotics?

The first step would be testing your gut health because it's essential to identify what bacteria/toxins are doing harm to your body - just like we need different antibiotics for different bugs, same thing applies in natural medicines. Also once overgrowth of pathogens are detected, probiotics won't do any jobs because pathogens got too 'dominant'. The golden rule is;

  1. Identify

  2. Target

  3. Repair / Nourish

Probiotics or no other 'healthy food/products' can only come in one you get to '3. Repair / Nourish' stage.

  • Multiple researches are identifying the hidden cause of endometriosis could be coming from pathogenic bacteria

  • Treatment for endometriosis works for adenomyosis and ovarian cysts because they are the same condition, just different location

  • Probiotics or any other 'healthy food/products' only works after controlling pathogens

Take care
